Brewed in Japan ─ The Evolution of the Japanese Beer Industry

Alexander (history, University of Wisconsin) has written a previous book on Japanese industry; now he explores economic and cultural aspects of the development of the beer industry in Japan, from its origins in the late 19th century through the present. There is special focus on the impact of WWII and the Japanese government in creating a distinctive Japanese beer brewing industry. An appendix offers data on Japan's beer brands and their manufacturers, 1869-1949. An extensive reference section lists historical eras, major brewing companies, supply and distribution companies, brewing-related organizations, government agencies, and laws and taxes related to beer. The book is illustrated with a total of 19 b&w historical photos and posters. The book is distributed in the US by the University of Washington Press and in Canada by the University of Toronto Press.
