Nature, Environment and Culture in East Asia ― The Challenge of Climate Change

This debut volume of a new series is a valuable addition to the literature on the physical and cultural impacts of climate change on East Asia. Taking a broad view of 'culture,' and explaining how culture relates to environmental issues which have reached a critical point in much of Asia, Sinologist/Tibetologist Meinert (Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, Essen, Germany) introduces the global challenges and initiatives toward mitigating them in East Asia. Focusing on China, Japan, and South Korea, international contributors address ecological threats in these countries in the contexts of economic realities and traditional ideas (e.g., Daoist) about the unity of man and nature, which can be used to inform ecological consciousness and green growth policies. Carmen Meinert, Dr. phil. (2001), is Research Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen. Her field of research covers Chinese and Tibetan religious history, Buddhist studies, and cultural perspectives on environmental and climate change.
