The Realities of International Criminal Justice

This volume provides a critical and analytical exploration of the development and impact of the international criminal justice system. The volume begins with an overview of the activities and cases of the nine international criminal courts and tribunals which have been formed since the early 1990s. The remaining 11 chapters than focus on issues associated with individual courts and tribunals, including popular perceptions of justice in relation to the prosecutions of the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the influence of international political strategies in the choice of prosecutions in the Special Court for Sierra Leone, the problem of state noncooperation in the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the political relationship between the United Nations Security Council's power to refer or defer situations to the International Criminal Court and its ability to carry out justice, the contradiction between the ICC's power to issue arrest warrants without the power to enforce the warrants, perceptions of legitimacy of the ICC in Sudan, and the financial efficiency of the ICC, among other topics.
