Applying psychologist Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, Abrahams (Violence Against Women Research Group, U. of Bristol) presents a study of the support needs of women who have left an abusive relationship and stayed for a time at refuges (called shelters in the US). Appendices include notes on England's major provider of such services; the research methodology (interviews with residents, former residents, and refuge workers); and UK resources for both women and men.
