Because of C 1-C 4 alkanes relative stability of C-C and C-H bonds, they cannot yet be easily substituted for more expensive alkanes and aromatics in the catalysis processes of the petroleum, petrochemicals, and bulk and fine chemicals industries. The key issues in these 26 papers, then, is how to identify and achieve novel catalytic mechanisms by which light alkanes can be activated in mild conditions, functionalized, and reacted selectively, while ensuring satisfactory catalyst stability and life.
