The novel centres on the friendship between the narrator and a man he calls Sensei who is haunted by dark events in his past. Sensei, however, refuses to reveal his deepest secret until the truth is finally revealed in tragic circumstances, etching itself on to the narrator's - and the reader's - kokoro, or heart.
