Linguists often distinguish between semantics and pragmatics by saying the former deals with literal meaning and the latter with non-literal meaning. Borjesson argues that the standard notion of literal and non-literal meaning is inadequate and in need of revision. She explores the properties that characterize and differentiate the two, and how these particular types of meaning are related to other types of meaning identified in the semantics/pragmatics literature, such as conversational implicative and implicit meaning aspects. If semantics and pragmatics are not to be characterized and differentiated by these traditional dichotomies, she asks, what criteria should be used.
