商品簡介
This study probes the origins, history, and implications of the deeply embedded metaphor that equates criminals with "beasts." The author examines the creation of "criminal beasts" in early modern literature and law, 18th-century changes in the criminal-animal trope, and the 19th century's conception of the criminal classes. She discusses such themes as colonialism, prisoners as suffering animals, and cruelty, in connection with works such as Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, William Hogarth's The Four Stages of Cruelty, and Ben Jonson's comedies, among others.
