Wood (Latin American studies, U. of Florida) and agronomist Porro present an interdisciplinary collection of 14 essays that connect historical, economic, and political causes to patterns of land use and deforestation in Amazonian regions of Brazil, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Together the essays are presented as an attempt to construct a explanatory framework of deforestation that draws from hierarchy theory in ecology. Strangely missing from the discussion is any concerted effort to examine the imposition of neoliberal economic models as a major driver of deforestation. Annotation c.
