Until the 1980s, communications journals routinely published articles focusing on overt communication behavior, says Courtright, and continuing to neglect communication behavior has the potential to relegate the discipline of communication to a perpetual second-class status in academia. He describes how to conceptualize, observe, measure, and analyze communication behavior and dusts off and updates some of the better ideas from the 1970s and 1980s as examples and inspiration for today's communication students and scholars.
