Most early Christians could not read, points out Schiell, a Baptist pastor in Texas, so the writings that have survived to the present were intended to be read aloud, to be performed in public. He argues that the performance of a text significantly affected an audience's understanding and interpretation of Christian writings. By the fourth century, the church recognized the lector as a minor office and ordained people into it, he says, and later they received some level of training in recitation. Taking the book of Acts as an example, he applies the common Greco-Roman rhetorical conventions for reading and delivery--such as gestures and vocal inflections--to try to reconstruct what early Christians received.
