Perspectives on Indian education in this anthology come from a variety of fields: anthropology, law, education, history, English, and Indigenous studies. The editors work to broaden the conversation about the education of indigenous peoples of the Americas beyond the often-told story of boarding schools, to connect educational issues for Indian people to the larger scholarship on the Americas and global questions in the author's field or region. This anthology seeks to offer multiple sites and perspectives that are missing in the existing literature on Indian education, including Indian education in the American South under Jim Crow, Kamehameha Schools in Hawai'i, Indigenous education in the Andes, boarding schools in rural Mexico, the Guswenta wampum and the history of education at Buffalo Creek, indigenous legal traditions and Canadian law schools, and other topics. Many contributors have researched the particular history of Indian education in their own community; the effect is diverse in both subject and approach.
