Before he died in 1993, N. D. G. James, President of the Royal Forestry Society, laid out the foundations for this history of the mighty tree. Forester Harris and naturalist, and author Jeanette Harris, who have renovated woodlands on their small farm in Cornwall, bring the vision to fruition. They discuss the early history; propagating and raising; management and silviculture; past and present uses; shipbuilding; myths, symbols, and the age of oak trees; and the role of the oak in the future.
