A rich and clever boy almost had everything a boy could even want, so he was only interested instrange and unusual things. One day he happened to see a very old mirror(鏡子) and he asked his parentsto buy it from an old man.
When the mirror arrived home, the boy went to see himself in it. His face looked very sad. He triedsmiling and making funny faces, but it was no use. Surprised, the boy went off to buy sweets. He camehome as happy as he could to look at his expressions in the mirror, but it was still sad-looking. He happilybought all kinds of toys home, but still he looked sad in that mirror. "What a terrible mirror! It's theworst mirror I've ever seen!" He threw the mirror in the corner.
That same afternoon on his way to playing in the park he saw a little boy who was crying his heartout. The rich boy went over to see what had happened. The little one told him that he couldn't find hisparents. Therefore, they together set off in search of them. As the little boy wouldn't stop crying, therich boy bought sweets to cheer him up. Finally, after much walking, they found the little boy's parentsout looking for him, very worried.
The rich boy headed for home, without having been able to play and without money but happy. Athome, he noticed a shining (發光的) light in the corner. He went over and found that it was the oldmirror. In it he saw his happy expressions. Now he understood the secret of that mirror-it was the onlymirror that could reflect(反映) the true joy of its owner. And since then, each morning when he lookedin that mirror and didn't see a special shine or a happy look, he already knew what he had to do to bringit back.
