Gomez explains a method for reducing the sulfates and removing metal from acid mine drainage wastewater with sand as a carrier material. He describes a type of fluidized bed reactor that is based on developing a biofilm on particles that support bacterial growth, which allows the biomass to remain within the reactor and therefore to operate at short hydraulic retention time. His topics include the effect of sulfide concentration on the location of the metal sulfide precipitation in the inverse fluidized bed (IFB) reactor, the effect of hydraulic retention time on the sulfate reduction process and the metal sulfide precipitate characteristics, and factorial design and response surface analysis to under the effect of process variables on the sulfate reduction process in the IFB reactor.
