King Cnut has never been a favorite of British historians. The interruption of Anglo-Saxon hegemony by his Danish takeover of England is often listed as one of the causes of the Norman Conquest. Cnut inherited England from his father, who invaded and subdued it before he died. With little in the way of military support, Cnut managed to reign for over twenty years, leaving England on several occasions without consequences. For England was only part of his "empire"; it also included Denmark and Norway. Bolton, now a manuscript specialist for Sotheby's, took his doctorate in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge and is eminently qualified to take on the study of Cnut's government in all the areas under his control. Bolton describes the methods used by Cnut to consolidate his power, adapting Anglo-Saxon infrastructure and co-opting native collaborators both in the church and the nobility. The way in which Cnut used these English organizational methods in Scandinavia is a facet rarely mentioned in English histories. Like Cnut, political history has been out of fashion lately. Timothy Bolton, Ph.D. (2005) in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, is the Specialist in Western Medieval Manuscripts at Sotheby's. He has published a number of studies in journals such as Medieval Scandinavia and Nottingham Medieval Studies on various aspects of Anglo-Scandinavian rule in England and Scandinavia.
