Polish linguist and translation scholar Biel examines how the body of European Union law was translated into Polish and harmonized with national Polish law as part of the requirements for Poland joining the European Union in 2004. In particular, he investigates whether the Polish of European Law, a substantial portion of which is directly applicable in Poland, is different from the language of national law and, if so, to what extent and how. His hypothesis is that they are different, not only because of the distortions typical of the translation process and source-language interference, but also because of the hybridity of the European Union discourse, its goals, and institutional norms of translating.
