Using a qualitative research approach with multiple-case studies, the author examines the organizational implications of software-as-a-service for software vendors, focusing on how they need to adapt existing organizational structures and processes to develop and operate software-as-a-service solutions. He considers why traditional vendors are struggling with software-as-a-service and its influence on value creation, as well as the characteristics and causes that account for potential change. He outlines terms and concepts, the current practices and issues of software-as-a-service vendors, and suggestions for organizational integration for vendors developing and operating software-as-a-service solutions.
