In 2002, Jan and Brett co-founded Renewing the Countryside, a Minnesota nonprofit that strengthens rural areas by supporting farmers, entrepreneurs, and other people who are engaged in sustainable and innovative initiatives, businesses, and projects. Jan is currently executive director and Brett is creative director. Jan also holds an appointment as Senior Fellow at the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and collaborates on local food projects through University of Minnesota Extension programs (localfoods.umn.edu).
