Mapping the World
With over 260 large-format pages of up-to-date and accurate reference mapping this is the ultimate geographical reference book. The most appropriate map scales are used, showing areas in detail while retaining legibility and allowing easy understanding of places and features in their true geographical context. The whole world, excluding the oceans and the Polar Regions, is mapped at a scale of at least 1:9 000 000. Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe, South America and most of North America are mapped at 1:5 000 000. Larger scale, detailed, mapping is then shown for selected areas of Europe, Canada, U.S.A., Brazil, China, India and Australia. Small islands in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans are mapped at 1:1 000 000. Antarctica – a hugely important and contested region – is mapped in its entirety at 1:15 000 000 while a new map of the Arctic region – itself becoming increasingly contested – shows it at 1:11 000 000.
Expert commentary on global themes
A thematic section at the front of the atlas introduces key global topics from leading specialists including Professor Stuart Cunningham (Scottish Association for Marine Science), Professor Mark Maslin (Professor of Climatology, UCL), Dr Eric V. Swanson (Open Data Watch Inc.), Professor Paul Younger (Professor of Energy Engineering, University of Glasgow) and Dr Peter Vujakovic (Head of Geographical and Life Sciences, Canterbury Christ Church University). Discover how the universe was formed, the make-up of our solar system, the structure of the Earth, where earthquakes have occurred, the world’s weather extremes, land cover of the world, protected areas of the world, population growth rates, distribution of, and issues surrounding energy resources, global wealth statistics, and how we communicate with each other.
Discover the world's largest...
Want to know what the world’s largest island, lake, river and mountain is? All is revealed in the geographical information section along with continental statistics and ranking tables. A comprehensive listing is also included of all independent countries, and dependent and disputed territories.
Comprehensive information
The index contains over 200,000 entries and includes all names shown on the maps as well as an extensive list of alternative names (for example, alternative spellings, historical names, and official long and short name forms). Each index entry includes the country or geographical area in which the place is located, and a map reference to allow it to be easily found. Full geographical coordinates – latitude and longitude in degrees and minutes – are included for all towns and cities, for selected other features and for the furthest downstream point of rivers.
With The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, you can start exploring, planning, researching and dreaming – it is the ultimate world atlas.
