This text presents Monte Carlo methods for simulating physical processes. Emphasizing different fundamental concepts, it uses simple particle transport concepts to demonstrate various techniques and examine associated issues. Derived from the author's course for advanced science and engineering students, the book includes detailed derivations, application examples from a range of disciplines, and homework problems. It is also suitable for researchers who use Monte Carlo methods. Code is available for readers to use in the examples.
Alireza Haghighat earned his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Washington in 1986. Between 1986 and 2001, he was a Professor of Nuclear Engineering at Penn State. From July 2001 to Sept 2009, he was Chair and Professor of the Department of Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at the University of Florida, and from Sept 2009 to June 2011 he was a Florida Power & Light Endowed Term Professor and partly served as the Director of the University of Florida Training Reactor. Since Jan 2011, he has been a Professor of Nuclear Engineering in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech (VT), has served as the Director of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Lab (NSEL) at Arlington, VA, and lead the Virginia Tech Theory Transport Group (VT3G).
Prof. Haghighat is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS). He is engaged in development of advanced particle transport methods/codes for real-time application to power, nonproliferation and safeguards, and medicine. He has published numerous papers, received several best paper awards, and presented numerous invited workshops, seminars, and papers nationally and internationally. He is a recipient of the 2011 Radiation Protection Shielding Division’s Professional Excellence Award, and received a recognition award from the Office of Global Threat Reduction for his leadership & contributions to design and analysis for the University of Florida Training Rector HEU to LEU fuel conversion in 2009. Prof. Haghighat is an active member of ANS, and has served at various leadership positions such as: Chair of Reactor Physics Division, Chair of Mathematics and Computation Division, co-founder of the Computational Medical Physics Working Group, and Chair of NEDHO (Nuclear Engineering Department Heads Organization).
