商品簡介
From the mid-19th century to WWI, the Canadian government propagated the image of the Canadian West as the 'promised land,' a place of unbridled prosperity and opportunity. Francis (history, University of Calgary, Canada) and Kitzan (Library and Archives Canada) gather well-known and promising new scholars in the field to explore the vision of the Prairie West. They look at various individuals and groups that promoted the Promised Land vision, chronicle the work of Prairie urban reformers, and examine the actions of individuals and groups who wanted to shape the region into an ideal society for a select group only. A final set of chapters looks at the Prairie West as Promised Land in the agrarian and post-agrarian eras of the 20th century up to the present. B&w historical photos and photos of contemporary paintings and sculptures are included. The book is distributed in the US by Michigan State University Press.
