An introduction to linkage analysis with emphasis on methodology rather than computer programs. The first chapter presents basic genetic principles in a simple and intuitive manner. Crossing over is introduced and demonstrated in a simple example. Many sections in the first two chapters represent an elementary introduction, and readers without any statistical knowledge should be able to understand them. For other sections and later chapters, some facility with equations and simple algebra will be beneficial. No introduction to probability calculus is given; however, an outline of some statistical methods, particularly significance testing, is provided. Jurg Ott is a professor and head of the Laboratory of Statistical Genetics at Rockefeller University. He is editor-in-chief of Human Heredity and the author of the first generally available computer program on human linkage analysis (LIPED).
