The international and interdisciplinary conference was called to share research findings on the same kinds of nonlinear dynamics problems being encountered in a wide range of areas, and especially to allow some cross-fertilization between the deterministic and stochastic communities. The lakes seems to refer to the location of the conference rather than its subject. One of the unifying themes of the 94 papers is the physics and mathematics of large fluctuations, which are quite rare but generate most of the interesting and important events that occur in fluctuating nonlinear systems. Other themes are neurons, synchronization, noise, and chaos; the cardiovascular systems; noise and chaos in biology and ecology; stability and stochastic bifurcation; energy propagation and barrier crossing; fundamentals; stochastic resonance; chaos and intermittency; flow; time and space; stochastic optimization and superconducting quantum interference devices; and signal processing.
