商品簡介
The golden age of popular entertainment between the Civil War and the 1920s coincided with the development of coal towns throughout Appalachia. Such towns built opera houses, which became community centers that hosted a variety of events from Shakespearean plays to boxing matches and pig revues. Based on primary sources and archival and contemporary photographs, Condee, director of the School of Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio U., considers 125 of these opera houses, many of which are now being renovated as part of a rebirth of community social centers.
