商品簡介

The book presents a life situation of a mentally disabled resident of a nursing home. The emphasis was first of all put on the notion of realization of needs of a person that is intellectually handicapped, in a care facility, as well as on matter regarding integration inside a given environment and normalization of life in institutional conditions. These problems are considered from two perspectives. The first one, arising from Goffman's vision of a total institution, where a unit is presented as an objectified subject of other people's actions, revealing a situation of isolation and personal dependence. The second perspective presents a model of relationships between personnel and charges, characterized with individualistic approach towards needs of the disabled, with respect to their right towards autonomy and self-determination. Confrontation of those two perspectives and spheres of those notions, i.e. normalization of the nursing home's resident, and on the other hand of negative consequences brought by acceptance of a role of a charge of such an institution, poses a subject of author's investigation. The essential aim of the study was to present the process of creating, maintaining and reconstructing a social order in the context of interpersonal relationships of workers with intellectually disabled residents of the nursing home. Specificity and the character of mutual influence of representatives of those two environments, as well as their tole as subjects that cooperate actively in processual dimension of constructing the order of interactions, constituted a foundation for searching an answer for the following question: In what way and through which mechanisms is it possible to achieve internal balance and relative stabilization of a care institution (a nursing home), since there are forces that destabilize the whole structure, and the main actors - intellectually disabled charges and personnel - that belong to completely different worlds?
