Remote, mysterious and holy are words much used to describe Tibet, a region tucked away at high elevation in the Himalayas. This part of the world has many claims to world fame, including the world’s highest peaks, the longest literary epic, the most pleasant sunshine and most devote Buddhist worshippers. These elements combine to create a magnificent plateau scenery reflecting ancient traditions, a deep religious atmosphere and colorful folklore that exercise magnetic pull on academics, tourists and adventurers alike.
China is a multi-ethnic nation and the Tibetans are an important member of this big Chinese family. The industrious peoples of this region combine to create a Tibetan culture known around the world. Tibetan culture has long helped enrich Chinese culture. As an inseparable part of China, Tibet, since its peaceful liberation in 1951, has traversed a brilliant course from wide-scale poverty to a people generally well-off, and from an isolated society to one open to modern science and culture. Together with 55 other ethnic groups of the Chinese nation, Tibetans are well on the road to modernization.
The book is divided into three parts, comprising an introduction to Tibet, its folklore and its culture. The major contents include descriptions of Tibet’s holy mountains and lakes, its history, religious practices, unique festivals, language, arts and crafts, as well those aspects associated with the development of life, such as the ecological environment, economy, education, medicare and transportation. There are clear explanations of Tibetan Buddhism, zanba highland barley flour that has long formed an important part of the Tibetan diet, buttered tea, qingke barley wine, Thangka paintings portraying Buddhist imagery, frescoes, monasteries, traditional sports, Tibetan opera and the songs and dances unique to Tibetan people.
The purpose is to provide a colorful and highly readable account that will help readers gain a better understanding of the autonomous region from all angles.
