After Stephen Grace's first novel was published, he moved to a trailer park in Laramie, Wyoming, in the wake of the Matthew Shepard murder and worked with at-risk youth. To publish a book about the historical cartography of Colorado, he collaborated with Library of Congress curators and with Vincent Virga, called “America’s foremost picture editor.” To research a narrative nonfiction book about China he sought out experiences as diverse as photographing skyscrapers in Shanghai and trail running in Tibet. To write about water conflicts in the American West he followed rivers west of the 100th meridian and charted currents throughout the region’s history. His bookDam Nation: How Water Shaped the West and Will Determine Its Future was a Colorado Book Award finalist. He served as a consultant for the filmDamNation, which has won numerous national and international awards, including the Audience Choice Award at the film’s 2014 world premiere at SXSW Film Festival, and the 2014 Documentary Award for Environmental Advocacy at the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital. He is an associate producer and the screenwriter for the forthcoming filmThe Great Divide about the past, present and future of water in the state of Colorado. He lives in Boulder, Colorado.
Jim Havey developed a love for photography and filmmaking during his first career as a social worker counseling troubled youth and their families.
