Lions or Jellyfish ― Newfoundland-ottawa Relations Since 1957

This study of intergovernmental relations in Canada focuses on the Canadian federal government’s relationship with the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, highlighting the determination of this province to move beyond the legacy of colonialism and assert greater control over its own affairs. The relationship is explored as a revealing example of conflicts between federal and provincial governments in Canada. Some subjects explored include hydroelectric development in Newfoundland and Labrador, the resettlement of fishing communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the debate on federal or provincial jurisdiction over offshore oil and gas. Some political figures discussed include Joseph Smallwood, Diefenbaker, Danny Williams, Clyde Wells, and Brian Mulroney. Black and white photos are included.
