After reviewing arguments on the state and status of pictoral means at the permeable interface between scientific research and communication, Richter proposes that pictoral means carry epistemic weight in the sense of being integral to arguments, which can be explained when taking into account the concept of ad hoc syntaxes. Her topics include an epistemic account of picture-like means, picture-like means in science as a philosophical problem, modeling mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, recent accounts of picture-like means in science, an extended argument for the epistemic weight of picture-like means, and a new account of the epistemic surpluses of picture-like means.
