The library of the University of South Carolina contains a collection of historical photographs of South Carolina in digital format. The editors of this book recruited poets and fiction writers, some famous, some local, to respond to the images. The book's format reproduces one photograph (with an identifying historical caption) on the facing page with the poem, prose poem/flash fiction, or short story it inspired. Each is identified with the name of the author. There is a forward by Nikky Finney, an introduction to the project, and a contributor's list with short biographies of the writers at the close of the book. The book will interest general readers who like the combination of old photographs and creative writing, and readers with a special interest in South Carolina history. It can also find use as a textbook on ekphrasis (writing that responds to objects or images) for courses in creative writing at any level.
