Daughters, Dads, and the Path of Grieving: Tales from Italian America is the story of the strong connections between daughters and dads, from childhood to adulthood, to the grief of losing a dad. Stories from 50 women, strategically woven throughout the book from childhood to the present, offer glimpses into the many aspects of these relationships that are warm and nurturing, sometimes complicated and conflicted, and always strong and abiding. The unfolding of a foundational relationship between dads and daughters is relevant throughout an individual's life, starting with childhoods by the beach and Sunday rides to visit grandparents, to the regular identity conflicts during the teen years and young adulthood, to the adult years of work and establishing families. With the death of a dad, a daughter can experience grief and consequently explore the many ways of coping and living with the loss of her dad. The women ultimately find great peace and meaning in the on-going relationship with their fathers, even after death, which seems to speak to the Italian style of family bonds—they continue in our hearts and souls, our dinner tables and homes, our children and grandchildren, our brothers and sisters, our conversations and conflicts, and our dreams and wishes.
