In the early 2000s, theorising in the field of New Literacy Studies (NLS) began to address the idea that there is not just one kind of literacy but multiple literacies associated with diverse sociocultural contexts. Semiotics began to be used to consider the ways in which texts were composed of multiple modalities, or semiotic resources, not just language but visual images, sounds and embodied gestures. This book represents the next wave of theorising in literacy studies, in which theories of mobility, networking and glocalisation have emerged to account for the dynamic landscape of globally circulating communication resources. The mobility turn is likely to preoccupy researchers, educators and cultural observers for a similar period as that in which NLS has been dominating the scene.
