Knowledge Production in the Arab World is a reflection on the status of knowledge production in the Arab world, taking into account not only empirical observations but also historical-structural analyses. In addition to bibliometric, empirical and desk research, the authors draw upon their strong experience in the field as researchers and participant observers to offer insightful and balanced perspectives on this under-researched topic.
The dynamic of research and innovation is not only related to national policies and national frontiers, but also depends on many social actors working at the global or national level, who are directly or indirectly involved in the development of scientific activities according to their own needs, perceptions and objectives. This results in differing logics of action that become evident at the local (and national) level where programmes effectively translate into actual work. This book closely examines how these different bodies and agendas interact in the Arab world, focusing on Arab scientific collaborations, both through national projects and on the global stage. It analyses the reasons behind Arab institutions’ lack of multilateral cooperation with global initiatives, and how this can be changed to promote stronger research and innovation.
