As a recording device, photography plays a unique role in how we collectively remember places and the events that have happened there. This book is the first comprehensive theoretical and historical analysis of German photography of place from 1945 to the present. Brett argues that the violent and dramatic changes in the topography of Germany during this period effected a new way of engaging with and seeing ‘place’. This ‘new seeing’ is related to how major historical events and associated places of trauma, memory and history are communicated through and leave their mark in seemingly empty images. The analysis includes original research on both world-renowned German photographers such as Thomas Struth, Thomas Demand, Michael Schmidt, Boris Becker and Thomas Ruff as well as photographers largely unknown in the Anglophone world, such as Friedrich Seidenstucker, Rudolf Schafer, Ricarda Roggan, Sarah Schonfeld and Laurenz Berges.
