商品簡介
Conceived and compiled by Rastafari scholars from a range of disciplines including sociology, philosophy, politics, history and cultural studies, this volume looks at Jamaican religious leader Leonard Percival Howell (1898-1981), sometimes called the first Rasta, who preached that Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was the Messiah returned to earth, which resulted in his imprisonment for sedition. Howell's message of reclaiming an ancestral African identity resonated with his followers, who knew only the dehumanizing conditions of post-slavery British colonial society. Drawing from speeches, essays and an interview with Howell's sons, the contributors provide a detailed look at the early years (1930s) of Howell's movement, which they note is a period in need of more attention.
