Roesch examines the roles of men and women in middle-class, modern Mexican-American families whose ideals are based on what are considered “respectable family values.” She seeks to establish a working definition of what it means to be a “macho man” or “modern woman” in this type of family structure and culture, differentiating between how these roles play out in both Mexican-American extended families and isolated nuclear families.
