Norquest reconstructs the phoneme inventory of Proto-Hlai based on data from 12 Hlai languages spoken on Hainan, China, and classifies the Hlai languages using innovative criteria and explaining his methodology and the contact relationships. Original sesqui-syllabic forms are necessary to account for the reflexes between the daughter languages, he says, and the inventory of initials is also marked by the presence of aspiration on most consonants in word-initial position. Peter K. Norquest, Ph.D. (2007), University of Arizona, is a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with that university. His research focuses upon the Kra-Dai and Austronesian language phyla of Southeast Asia, and he has published various historical linguistics papers on both.
