The Reformation is one of the most important events in world history. It sparked changes in beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that set off a chain of devastating wars in Europe, created the United States and still shapes the modern world, even in secular societies that no longer have any faith in a supernatural deity, and in countries where Christians are in the minority. Yet it had relatively low-key beginnings: in 1517 a German monk, Martin Luther, thought there was room for improvement in the Roman Catholic church to which he belonged. Instead, he discovered he had founded a new religion, which became known as Protestantism.

作者簡介
Kathleen Chater worked at the BBC as a programme researcher until 1994. Since then she has been a freelance historian, writer and genealogist. In 2007 she gained a doctorate for a thesis on black people in England and Wales during the period of the British slave trade.
