The Online Critical Edition augments the outstanding selection of historical materials included in theBroadview Edition ofFrankenstein by providing a wide selection of more recent articles and other materials specifically oriented to the study ofFrankenstein using critical theory. The Online Critical Edition is thus perfectly suited to courses emphasizing theoretical approaches. Though thesite can be purchased independently and used with any text ofFrankenstein, this package offers the Broadview Edition of the text (which also includes an introduction and historical contextual materials) together with the Online Critical Edition at a discounted price.
The online format of the Critical Edition allows for a breadth and depth of material that would be unwieldy in a print book. A selection of sixteen articles offers a wide representation of critical approaches toFrankenstein, beginning with the groundbreaking feminist readings by Ellen Moers and Sandra Gilbert and extending to considerFrankenstein with regard to race, class, history of science, the context of the French Revolution, and more. Alongside these readings specific toFrankenstein, the site also features foundational writings by key figures in literary theory, from Freud to Foucault.
