This study examines the role of vermin in early modern literature, science, and political ideology. Literary works discussed include Shakespeare's Macbeth, Cowley's The Jew of Malta, and Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year. Other primary sources analyzed include medical documents and other writings. The book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of the discourse on vermin and how they were perceived as threats to humans due to their association with famines and epidemics. The study also investigates how vermin were compared to unwanted people that threatened the sociopolitical order and national identity. B&w historical illustrations are included.
