商品簡介
This study of a southern city during WWII combines descriptive narrative and analysis to reveal how the war altered the city and the lives of its residents, and demonstrates how factors such as race, gender, class, and religion shaped the wartime experience of the city. It draws on primary sources including local newspapers and manuscript collections. Discussion touches on militarism and paranoia, business, labor, and social aspects of the home front experience, and political developments during the war. The study confirms that the war fostered economic and social benefits for many Charlotteans, while others, such as anti-war religious sects, striking workers, and blacks, experienced a darker side of the "Good War." Includes b&w historical photos. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
