商品簡介
Temporally framing the narrative between the 1999 protests against the World Trade Organization in Seattle and the global financial crisis that began in 2008, this volume explores performative practices of US political activists and their relation to the particular political/cultural moment. Three discourses characterize the discussion: the idea of protest as performance, the notion of engaged citizenship and its relevance to the study of activist performance, and issues surrounding the function of the performers' whiteness during their protest performances. Following theoretical discussion that draws on theater studies for understandings of performance and its connection to culture and politics, as well as concepts of the public sphere, the text offers case studies of the performative acts of the activist-artist collective The Church of Life After Shopping, electoral performances of humor and parody enacted by the group Billionaires for Bush, and the use of new media by The Yes Men--who set up fake websites in order to facilitate media invitations to come on news shows as, to name one example, (fake) representatives of Dow Chemicals in order to apologize and claim full responsibility for the Bhopal chemical disaster.
