The narrative poem was translated about 1300 from the Anglo-Norman romance, and contains only about a third of the original, from the hero's marriage to his death. The translator also changed the verse form from couplets into 12-line tail-rhyme stanzas, and made some adaptations in the content that Wiggins finds revealing and explains why.
