Coal is, and remains, a primary fuel for energy generation in many parts of the world. But the burning of coal is a problem for greenhouse gas emissions and particulate emissions. Thus, the conversion of underground deposits of goal, while in place underground, to gas (chiefly methane) is a promising technology for utilizing coal while reducing some of its unwanted byproducts. It has the potential to be a cleaner technology than conventional coal combustion, and it can tap difficult-to-mine, deep coal deposits across the world. However, commercialization of UCG has been riddled with a variety of issues, including public perception and a lack of clear comprehension about underlying physicochemical phenomena. This book will bridge the gap in knowledge, and highlight modern findings related to the complex chemical and physical interactions in UCG. With a focus on the chemical reactions in UCG – and treating the underground coal cavity as ‘nature’s own chemical reactor’, various mathematical modeling studies that serve to unravel some of the mysteries of this decades-old technique will be revealed.
