In the current context, rapid changes in curriculum content and the imposition of high stakes testing have constrained teachers' capacity for innovation. At the same time, researchers have continued to explore the emergence of new literacy practices. This has led to a divergence of interest. Recognizing the need for a more sustained conversation about the future of literacy, Literacy, Media, Technology engages readers in a new conversation about the changing nature of literacy and the implications for educational policy and practice.
This book explores the continuities and intersections between past, present and future literacy practices, media and technology, examining the changes over time in both formal and informal education. In doing this, contributions from leading scholars bring to light changing practices and theoretical perspectives, focusing particularly on how the materiality of objects and devices is woven into the meanings that are made. Topics covered include identifying the significance of screen-based communication, social media, and portable devices to new and emerging forms of reading and writing, producing and consuming. The final chapter includes reflections from practising teachers and their own views of changing literacy practices which are used to identify the connections, and gaps, between the work of researchers and the everyday experience of teachers.
In bringing together a compelling and original collection of perspectives from key contemporary literacy scholars and practising teachers, Literacy, Media,Technology establishes a strong argument for change and forms the basis for a set of recommendations to guide future development work in enhancing and updating the literacy curriculum.
