Fourteen-year-old Rose Solomon’s brother Abe is supposed to be living in Brooklyn. So Rose is shocked to discover a photograph captioned The Southwestern Scourge of 1915 in the El Paso newspaper. There, dusty and whiskered, is Abe—standing shoulder-to-shoulder with none other than Pancho Villa. Furious about Abe’s lies; fearful for his safety; and weary of her observant Jewish parents’ undivided attention, Rose is determined to get her brother home. Unfortunately, her daring plan to summon Abe is foiled when she is captured by Pancho Villa’s men and taken to their leader’s hideaway.
