History teacher Threston follows the slow and difficult process of integration of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Athletics from early (failed) attempts in the 1860s through official integration in 1953 and beyond. He provides biographical and statistical information on some of the African American players who encountered discrimination and discusses the white players and other personnel who had difficulty accepting them on their teams. The text is based upon the author's 1997 master's thesis for Rutgers University. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
