商品簡介

Lower Manhattan is bustling and lively at practically any hour of the day. Pedestrians, cars, taxis, bicycles, and buses are the lifeblood pumping through the veins of the city’s heart.

What began as a tiny Dutch settlement in 1626 at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island slowly expanded. From the 1650s through to the end of the century, Wall Street marked the northernmost limits. As the eighteenth century progressed, development continued, but by 1790, Varick and Houston Streets were still “country”—with great old oak trees, wild shrubs, partridges and rabbits roaming the area. When City Hall was built in 1811 just south of Chambers Street, it was considered on the edge of town. By 1828, development on Broadway only extended as far north as 10th Street.

Greenwich Village was not even considered uptown, it was considered out of town. Though there are various interpretations of the northern boundary of Lower Manhattan, some beginning at Chambers Street. This book takes a broader definition that includes everything south of 14th Street—a length of a little more than two-and-a- half miles.

Though all traces of the Dutch era have been obliterated, Lower Manhattan has some of the city’s finest surviving early nineteenth century buildings. Greenwich Village started as a refuge for New Yorkers fleeing north from yellow fever outbreaks in the nineteenth century, and in the twentieth it became an edgy, bohemian place that was home to a wide array of quirky characters and stores selling unique clothing and alternative music.

Little Italy, meanwhile, formed to accommodate Italian immigrants and create a home away from home. That magical ambiance has been largely retained, along with many old buildings, and walking its streets is like being transported back in time.
