Child and Adolescent Psychiatry ― Asian Perspectives

This is a comprehensive volume on issues and concerns related to child and adolescent mental health in Asia, which includes contributions from experts in child psychiatry from Asia and focuses on Asian issues and concerns. The chapters provide accurate and detailed accounts of the current state of knowledge through integrating research approaches and findings from clinical studies. Each chapter scrutinizes existing information, emphasizes areas of growth and provides fresh ideas on a particular topic. The book thus integrates various clinical and scientific perspectives on clinical disorders in children and adolescents with a focus on Asia. 

The various sections deal with crucial topics in child and adolescent treatments: the current clinical understanding of the ways in which possible influences might work in the development of psychopathology; substance use disorders, their neurobiological correlates and management strategies; early environmental influences in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders in children; issues of parenting, child rearing and cultural practices in Asia, which hold great importance in personality development and adaptation; psychopharmacology; non-pharmacological treatments for children; and children’s testimony and legal issues in the care and treatment of children with health problems.

Savita Malhotra is the head of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services, Department of Psychiatry, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. She is a recipient of the D.L.N. Murthy Rao Oration Award, Bhagwat Award, PPA 1 Award, Bombay Psychiatric Society Silver Jubilee Year Award of the Indian Psychiatric Society; Tilak Venkoba Rao Award of the Indian Council of Medical Research; and the WHO Fellowship in Child Mental Health. She has also received the Dr K.L. Wig Oration Award of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. She is a Life Fellow of the Indian Association for Social Psychiatry and of the Indian Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Professor Malhotra has been actively involved with several national and international societies and organisations. She is President Elect of the Asian Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions, and Board Member of the Child Psychiatry Section of WPA. She has published over 200 research papers and book chapters and authored/edited several books.

Paramala J. Santosh (M.D., Ph.D., MRCPsych) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, Head of the Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology (CIPP) at Maudsley Hospital, and an Honorary Reader of the Institute of Child Health and Institute of Psychiatry, London. He has been involved in medication trials in children and adolescents with ADHD, Conduct Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorders, is active in measurement and health outcome research, acquired brain injury and metabolic syndromes and has published widely.?
